It's goodby Tantawi, goodbye Anan, and hello God-knows-what in the new Egypt.
Recently elected Muslim Brotherhood capo Morsi threw a wrench into US-Egypt relations today with the sacking of both Defense Minister Tatawi and Army chief of staff General Anan. Anan as you recall was America's conduit into Egyptian Spring. He was actually in Washington when the revolution broke out.
For all the sunny platitudes that have been showered on Morsi since his election, the big dogs in Washington have been taking a lot of comfort from the fact that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces was a) still securely in their pocket, and b) still holding the levers of power in Egypt.
Morsi just let them know that's over.
Speculation is running amok about what this means for the peace treaty with Israel. Morsi has made conflicting statements in the past. He both wants to honor the treaty but fulfill the will of his people. It's now a democracy after all.
He wants to stop terrorists infiltrating the Sinai from Gaza, but he also wants to stop Egypt's participation in Israel's blockade of Gaza.
The fun has just begun!
