Afghan interpreter gets life-saving visa to Canada

This is a story that should make your blood boil.

Sayed Shah Sharifi was one of those well-meaning Afghans who bought the bullshit about the ISAF/NATO/US being there for the long haul, not cutting and running etc.

After a years-long battle with immigration twats and a lot of support from Canadian military types who had the balls to speak up for him, Sharifi has made it to safety in Canada.

And that is in spite of the fact that the Harper gang sees Sharifi and all the other Afghans who are applying for refugee status in Canada as Taliban moles who are determined to wreak havoc in the Great White North.

The Taliban who control Afghanistan unofficially and will rule it again officially within months of the ISAF withdrawal rightly see Sharifi and his cohorts as traitors.

Afghans who served the occupiers are a persecuted lot in Afghanistan today. The least we can do is get them out of harms way now that we are in the process of cutting and running. Sharifi has another 500 or so colleagues who served with the Canadians. The American and other occupying forces had thousands more. All of these people and their entire extended families deserve safe passage and a guaranteed fresh start in the countries that enticed them into working for them.

The fact that the Harper gang is comfortable throwing roadblocks in their way, after they have put their lives on the line for Canadian troops, is beyond disgusting.

And even though I have never for one moment agreed with any aspect of Canada's mission in Afghanistan, I wholeheartedly commend those reporters and especially the guys in uniform who stuck their necks out to put in a word for Sharifi in the immigration process.
