Fearing that a chance to talk tough on the big stage was slipping away, John Baird railed against the China/Russian veto of a UN resolution demanding the resignation of the Syrian President today.
According to Baird, "today's failure of the UN Security Council to effectively deal with the crisis in Syria is yet another free pass for the illegitimate Assad regime and those backing it."
Let's consider this for a moment. China and Russia vetoed this resolution because they were utterly misled by the West ten months ago when they abstained on the vote to declare a no-fly zone in Libya.
As we now know, that turned into a green light for regime change. What followed was the murder of Gadaffi and the subsequent anarchy throughout the country.
China and Russia are in no hurry to be fooled again.
Baird went on to say that "history will judge those whose actions prolong this senseless violence."
Once again, even the history of the past year seems to escape Mr. Baird. If one considers the history of senseless violence in Libya for example, one sees sporadic outbursts now and then during the 42 years of Gadaffi rule, but senseless violence didn't grip the entire nation until resolution 1973 was passed and Baird and his NATO cronies proceeded with an entirely illegal nine month bombing campaign.
That is just the past year, of course. If Mr. Baird is interested in senseless violence he might want to consider who is responsible for the last ten years of senseless violence in Afghanistan or Iraq.
It's certainly not the countries who vetoed this resolution.
